This iconic “Paper Caper” dress, produced by the Scott Paper Company in 1966, exemplifies the fleeting yet revolutionary disposable fashion trend of the era, crafted from Dura-Weve—a proprietary nonwoven material composed of 93 percent cellulose paper napkin stock reinforced with rayon webbing for enhanced durability and a fabric-like drape. The sleeveless A-line shift design, available in sizes 5 to 15, features a simple two-piece construction with adjustable straps, a patch pocket on the hip, and an envelope-style closure, ensuring a flattering fit and ease of movement. Its hallmark is a vibrant, gift-wrap-inspired print depicting a surreal poppy field: bold scarlet and tangerine blooms cascade against a cerulean sky, accented by emerald stems and golden highlights, capturing the psychedelic exuberance of 1960s pop art.

Launched as a promotional premium for Scott’s “Color Explosion” line of colorful paper products, the dress required two proofs of purchase and $1.25 for shipping, yielding over 500,000 orders in its first year and sparking a nationwide fad that transformed Scott from a sanitary paper manufacturer into an unwitting fashion pioneer. While Scott’s originals were limited to patterns like black-and-white Op art or red paisley bandana prints, this poppy variant aligns with the era’s experimental motifs, often adapted by licensees to promote bold, graphic aesthetics. Designed for one to three wearings before disposal, it was fire-resistant in its untreated state but rendered flammable after washing, underscoring its novelty ethos.

Ideal for retro-themed events, costume collections, or as a museum-worthy artifact, the dress weighs under 200 grams, offering featherlight comfort while remaining recyclable and hypoallergenic.
